President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has applauded the Finnish government for its decisive action in the arrest of Simon Ekpa, a separatist figure whose activities have been deemed a threat to Nigeria’s peace and unity.
Speaking during a formal ceremony at the State House in Abuja, where he received Letters of Credence from the Finnish, European Union, and Algerian ambassadors, Tinubu emphasized his administration’s unwavering stance against divisiveness and terrorism.
The President specifically addressed Finland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Sanna Selin, acknowledging the Finnish government’s cooperation in addressing Ekpa’s controversial actions.
“I commend Finland for its commitment to safeguarding human rights and supporting Nigeria in addressing threats to its unity, including the trial of Simon Ekpa,” Tinubu stated. “Nigeria is an indivisible nation. We have endured turbulent times, and we cannot tolerate the promotion of terrorism or division. Our future lies in unity and collaboration.”
Tinubu also used the platform to highlight his government’s ongoing reforms aimed at economic stabilization and growth. “Stability and cohesion are essential to moving Nigeria forward,” he noted, urging Nigerians to support the challenging but necessary changes to foster a brighter future.
In response, Ambassador Selin expressed Finland’s support for Nigeria’s transformation efforts. She acknowledged the challenges of implementing reforms but emphasized their importance for the country’s long-term prosperity. Selin also highlighted Finland’s interest in collaborating with Nigeria in peace mediation and the energy sector.
In a separate meeting with European Union Ambassador Gautier Mignot, President Tinubu called for deeper trade relations and greater technological cooperation. He emphasized the need for digitalization and automation in Nigeria’s public and private sectors to enhance service delivery and governance.
“Nigeria requires support in digitalizing and automating its operations to improve efficiency and unlock opportunities,” Tinubu said.
Ambassador Mignot responded by praising Nigeria’s potential, stating that enhanced collaboration in development and technology could help Nigeria realize its untapped economic possibilities.
Addressing bilateral relations with Algeria, Tinubu urged stronger cooperation to advance the trans-Saharan African Gas Pipeline project. He emphasized the pipeline’s critical role in bolstering Nigeria’s energy sector and driving regional development.
The meetings underscored President Tinubu’s focus on fostering international partnerships to advance Nigeria’s unity, stability, and economic growth while addressing global and domestic challenges.
