JOS, Plateau State — More than 20 people have reportedly been killed and several others injured after suspected gunmen attacked Binper community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack occurred between midnight on Monday and the early hours of Tuesday, August 18, 2026, according to residents who spoke about the incident.
An eyewitness, Daniel Musa, said the attackers, who were heavily armed, moved from house to house, breaking into homes and attacking residents while they slept.
“Our village came under attack last night and in the early hours of today, Tuesday, by heavily armed persons,” Musa said.
He alleged that the attackers forced open the doors of sleeping residents and killed them, adding that more than 20 deaths had been confirmed as of Tuesday morning.
“Several others sustained serious injuries, while some people are still missing,” he said.
Another resident, John Dalyop, confirmed the attack and described the incident as devastating.
Dalyop called on the newly appointed Commissioner of Police in Plateau State to take immediate action to identify and arrest those responsible for the killings.
He condemned the attack as barbaric and urged both the state and Federal Governments to intensify security measures in Mangu and other communities considered vulnerable to attacks.
According to him, injured victims had been taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, while community leaders and residents were working to establish the whereabouts of those still missing.
Security personnel were reportedly deployed to the community on Tuesday morning in an effort to restore calm and prevent further violence.
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to obtain official confirmation and reaction from security authorities were unsuccessful.
