MANCHESTER — Manchester United have intensified efforts to bolster their goalkeeping department following an injury setback to first-choice goalkeeper André Onana, who is reportedly sidelined with a hamstring injury ahead of the 2025/2026 season.
The Cameroonian, who joined the Red Devils from Inter Milan in 2023, has faced both fitness challenges and inconsistent form, prompting United to explore alternative options to secure their goal-line.
Initial reports had linked the club with a move for Aston Villa’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine is said to be open to a switch to Old Trafford, but Villa’s hefty £40 million valuation has reportedly stalled the deal.
Now, attention has turned to Brazil, where Manchester United are prepared to activate the £6 million release clause of Botafogo’s promising shot-stopper, John Victor. According to Goal Brazil, United have formally notified Botafogo of their interest, and the Brazilian club is bracing for the 22-year-old’s potential exit.
In anticipation of Victor’s departure, Botafogo have begun eyeing Atlético Mineiro’s Matheus Mendes as a possible replacement.
John Victor, who has been a standout performer in Brazil’s Série A, is known for his reflex saves and composure under pressure — qualities United hope can offer immediate backup and long-term value.
Meanwhile, Onana is expected to miss all of United’s pre-season fixtures and remains doubtful for the club’s Premier League opening match against Arsenal in August. His absence adds urgency to the club’s push to secure a reliable deputy before the new campaign kicks off.
Manchester United are expected to complete a decision on the goalkeeping front in the coming days as manager Erik ten Hag looks to shore up key areas of the squad ahead of the new season.
