Trump Issues 50-Day Ultimatum to Russia on Ukraine War, Threatens 100% Tariffs

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday issued a bold ultimatum to Russia, demanding an end to its war in Ukraine within 50 days or face sweeping new economic sanctions, including 100 percent tariffs targeting not only Russian exports but also nations doing business with Moscow.

Speaking during an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump expressed growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning that continued aggression in Ukraine would come at a steep price.

“We’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days,” Trump declared. “Tariffs at about 100 percent.” He added that these would be “secondary tariffs” aimed at Russia’s trade partners, including China, India, Turkey, and Belarus, in a move designed to choke off Moscow’s access to international markets.

Trump, who once pledged to end the Ukraine war “within 24 hours,” said his patience with Putin had run out. “I’m very, very unhappy with him,” Trump said, adding that even his wife, Melania Trump, had influenced his shift in stance. “She said, ‘Oh really? Another city was just hit.’ That made me think.”

NATO Arms Deal for Ukraine

In a coordinated announcement, NATO Chief Mark Rutte revealed a landmark weapons procurement deal that will see NATO member states purchasing billions of dollars’ worth of U.S.-made arms, including Patriot missile systems, for delivery to Ukraine.

The deal is expected to significantly bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Rutte praised the agreement as a major breakthrough, addressing Trump’s long-standing complaint that the U.S. bears a disproportionate share of NATO’s Ukraine support.

Countries including Germany, Canada, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK are participating in the weapons purchase, which Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed as “crucial and deeply appreciated.”

“If I were Vladimir Putin today and heard you speaking,” Rutte told Trump, “I would reconsider negotiations very seriously.”

Ukraine Welcomes Move, Russia Pushes Forward

U.S. Special Envoy Keith Kellogg arrived in Kyiv on Monday, meeting with Zelensky to begin coordinating the delivery of the promised military support. Ukrainian troops on the frontlines responded with cautious optimism.

“Better late than never,” said a soldier in eastern Ukraine who identified himself as Grizzly, speaking with AFP.

Meanwhile, Russian forces continued their offensive, claiming the capture of new territory in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions and killing at least three civilians in attacks on Kharkiv and Sumy, according to Ukrainian officials.

Divided Reactions

The Trump administration’s tough stance has drawn praise and criticism alike. U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham (R) and Richard Blumenthal (D), sponsors of a bipartisan sanctions bill, applauded the move as a “powerful ultimatum.” However, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas criticized the 50-day timeline as too lenient, saying, “Fifty days is a very long time when civilians are dying every day.”

Beijing condemned the proposed secondary sanctions as “illegal coercion,” warning that “long-arm jurisdiction” would only escalate global tensions.

Political Shake-Up in Kyiv

Back in Ukraine, President Zelensky proposed a major cabinet reshuffle amid the ongoing war. He nominated Yulia Svyrydenko, the current economy minister, as the new Prime Minister, while recommending Denys Shmygal, the outgoing PM, as the next Defense Minister.

As tensions rise on both military and diplomatic fronts, the world watches closely to see whether Moscow will heed Trump’s warning — or push deeper into the battlefield.

Further developments are expected as the 50-day deadline approaches.
