Kenneth Okonkwo Slams Edo Governor Over “Threat” to Peter Obi, Warns of Legal Action

Veteran Nollywood actor and constitutional lawyer, Kenneth Okonkwo, has come out strongly against Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, accusing him of issuing a dangerous and unconstitutional threat against Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.

The criticism stems from Governor Okpebholo’s recent comments suggesting that Obi must seek permission before visiting Edo State, which Okonkwo described as “a direct threat to the life” of the former Anambra State governor and “an insult to the entire Igbo race.”

In a fiery interview, Okonkwo lambasted the governor for his remarks, warning that any harm that befalls Obi would be laid at Okpebholo’s feet.

“If a strand of hair falls from Peter Obi, then you will know he has kinsmen,” Okonkwo said. “The governor said his security can no longer be guaranteed unless he gets clearance. That’s a dangerous and unconstitutional statement.”

He argued that under Nigeria’s constitution, citizens are free to move and reside in any part of the country without needing gubernatorial approval. Citing legal precedents and civil rights, he stated, “You don’t even need permission to hold a peaceful protest—so how can you require permission just to visit a state?”

Okonkwo vowed to pursue legal action if the governor fails to issue a public apology, insisting that “no Nigerian should be subjected to such abuse of office and ethnic bias.”

“If the Governor does not apologize, I will be on his case,” he stated. “What decorum did he show by threatening the life of a citizen?”

When informed that the governor’s Chief Press Secretary later claimed his principal’s words were taken out of context, Okonkwo dismissed the explanation as “belated damage control.”

He further criticized the governor’s past conduct, contrasting his swift appeasement of Northern leaders during a past incident in Kano with his current tone toward Obi, whom he believes is being targeted because he is Igbo.

“This governor wouldn’t dare say such to a Yoruba or Hausa leader. When Northerners were killed in Edo, he ran to Kano and prostrated. His threat against Obi is a threat to the Igbo nation.”

Okonkwo also declined to respond to comments made by Edo APC chairman, Jared Tenebe, who allegedly made even harsher remarks about Obi. Calling Tenebe “inconsequential,” Okonkwo said he would not dignify him with a response.

The actor-lawyer closed by urging Obi to be more assertive in defending his rights, recalling a similar threat made against him in Benue State which Obi did not publicly challenge.

“Enough is enough. Peter Obi must not be treated as a second-class citizen in his own country.”

The controversy continues to generate heated debate online and in political circles, with supporters calling for decorum and respect from political leaders across party lines.
