FIFA Fines Nigeria, DR Congo Over Misconduct During World Cup Qualifier

World football governing body FIFA has imposed disciplinary sanctions on Nigeria and Democratic Republic of the Congo following incidents that occurred during a 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers match between the two nations.

In its latest disciplinary report covering qualifying fixtures, FIFA stated that both football federations committed separate offences during the match played on November 16, 2025.

According to the report, Nigeria was sanctioned for a breach relating to order and security at matches after spectators were found to have thrown objects onto the pitch during the encounter.

The violation falls under Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, leading to a fine of 1,000 Swiss francs imposed on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Meanwhile, the Congolese Football Association received a heavier penalty after supporters were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the match.

FIFA said the act contravened Article 17.2.d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, resulting in a fine of 5,000 Swiss francs against the DR Congo football authority.

The global football body explained that disciplinary rulings are determined based on the specific circumstances of each case and may still be subject to appeal.

It added that while a summary of sanctions is released publicly to keep the media informed, the official legal decisions are communicated directly to the federations involved.
