The Nigeria Police Force has refuted a viral social media video claiming a terrorist attack in Abuja, describing the content as false and deliberately misleading.
Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, said on Friday that no such incident occurred, stressing that the video was fabricated to create panic and erode public confidence in the security situation within the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the footage used in the viral clip was sourced from unrelated online materials and manipulated to construct a false narrative. Authorities said the intent was to incite fear and disrupt public order.
In response, police operatives arrested a suspect identified as Pam Joseph, who was allegedly linked to the creation and circulation of the video. The arrest followed intelligence gathering and digital forensic analysis that traced the origin of the content.
The police emphasized that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it does not include spreading misinformation capable of threatening national security. They urged citizens to verify information before sharing it on social media platforms.
The suspect remains in custody and is expected to be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining public safety, noting that it will continue to monitor digital platforms and take action against individuals who spread false or harmful information.
