The opposition Peoples Redemption Party has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign, accusing his administration of failing to address the country’s worsening security challenges and protect citizens from rising violence.
The demand was made on Thursday in a statement issued by the party’s National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, who said the government had fallen short of its constitutional responsibility to safeguard lives and property.
According to the PRP, insecurity has spread across the country, leaving citizens increasingly vulnerable to attacks by criminal groups. The party argued that violent crime is no longer confined to specific regions, but has become a nationwide concern affecting communities across Nigeria.
Baba-Ahmed said the growing wave of violence has created an atmosphere of fear, with citizens from all walks of life facing security threats. He expressed concern over the increasing targeting of schoolchildren and other vulnerable groups, warning against accepting insecurity as a normal part of daily life.
The opposition party maintained that despite the concentration of political authority at the federal level, the administration has not delivered the level of security Nigerians expected. It argued that there is little evidence of significant improvement in the country’s security situation under the current government.
The PRP chairman further stated that Nigerians affected by kidnappings, banditry, and other violent crimes should not be expected to wait until the 2027 general elections before demanding accountability from their leaders.
He urged citizens to speak out against what the party described as ineffective leadership and called for urgent action to address the country’s security crisis.
The statement adds to growing political debate over insecurity in Nigeria, as concerns continue to mount over kidnappings, attacks on communities, and the safety of schoolchildren in several parts of the country.
The presidency had not responded to the PRP’s latest remarks at the time of filing this report.
