UK Unveils Fresh Sanctions Package Against Russia at G7 Summit

The United Kingdom has announced a new wave of sanctions targeting Russia, introducing 70 additional measures aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow to end its war in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer unveiled the sanctions on Tuesday as leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations gathered for a special summit session in the French town of Evian-les-Bains. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was also in attendance as allies sought to strengthen support for Kyiv and intensify pressure on the Kremlin.

Starmer said the new measures were part of a coordinated effort with G7 partners to weaken Russia’s ability to sustain the conflict.

“Working with our G7 allies, we will continue to increase the pressure on Putin and his circle of collaborators until Russia’s war machine is brought to a halt and peace returns to our continent,” he said.

According to a joint statement from the UK government and the Prime Minister’s office, the sanctions target Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” military procurement networks, and financial channels allegedly used to evade existing international restrictions.

The measures include sanctions against more than 20 oil tankers linked to Russia’s shadow fleet, vessels that operate under alternative registrations to transport Russian energy exports and other assets.

The UK also became the first G7 nation to impose sanctions on several liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels recently acquired by Russia to support an already sanctioned Arctic LNG project.

British officials said the latest sanctions package is designed to disrupt Russia’s military supply chains and limit access to financial networks that support the country’s war effort.

The announcement comes amid renewed violence in Ukraine following a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack that reportedly killed at least 11 people and caused damage to key infrastructure, including an Orthodox monastery in Kyiv.

In addition to the sanctions, the UK government announced support for Ukraine’s energy sector through a financing arrangement that will enable the supply of enriched uranium for the country’s nuclear power stations.

The package includes £210 million ($282 million) in export finance to allow UK-based uranium supplier Urenco to provide fuel to Ukraine’s state nuclear operator, Energoatom. British officials said the agreement would help power Ukrainian nuclear facilities for the next two years.

Starmer is expected to urge fellow G7 leaders to take stronger collective action to help Ukraine secure what he described as a “just and lasting peace.”
