The 2027 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to intensify security measures following a series of deadly attacks on communities in Benue State.
Obi made the call on Saturday in a post on his X account after visiting Otukpo-Nobi and Efeyi-Ugboju, two communities recently affected by attacks.
He said more than 10 people were killed or remained missing following the attack on Otukpo-Nobi, while several others sustained injuries and were receiving treatment in hospitals.
According to Obi, a separate attack on Efeyi-Ugboju claimed the lives of more than 13 people, with several others injured.
The former presidential candidate also said he was informed during his visit that 14 people had reportedly been kidnapped earlier that morning along Ankpechi Road.
During the visit, Obi went to the site of the mass burial of victims in Otukpo-Nobi, where he joined community members in praying for those who lost their lives.
He also visited a hospital where some of the injured victims were receiving treatment, expressing solidarity with them and praying for their speedy recovery.
Following his assessment of the situation, Obi urged the Federal Government to take more decisive action to protect citizens and address areas that have become vulnerable to criminal activities.
“Having visited, seen, and spoken with those affected, I urge the Federal Government to demonstrate a greater commitment to securing the lives and property of citizens and to closing the ungoverned spaces that have become breeding grounds for insecurity,” he said.
Obi stressed that the protection of lives and property remains one of the fundamental responsibilities of government, adding that the welfare and security of citizens must remain a priority.
“The primary purpose of the government is the security and welfare of its citizens. When the government fails in this responsibility, as it has with the people of Otukpo-Nobi, Efeyi-Ugboju, and other troubled communities, it must be reminded of that sacred obligation,” he said.
He expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the attacks and prayed for the souls of the deceased.
“May the souls of the departed continue to rest in perfect peace. Amen,” Obi added.
