US President Donald Trump has announced what he described as an unprecedented economic campaign against Iran, warning that countries and businesses that provide financial or commercial support to Tehran could face severe economic consequences.
Trump made the announcement Wednesday, saying the United States would pursue an aggressive strategy aimed at isolating Iran economically as the conflict approaches its sixth month without a clear diplomatic or military resolution.
“Today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, describing the initiative as “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.”
He also warned countries against providing assistance to Iran through their financial institutions, businesses, airports or government agencies.
“ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences,” Trump said.
The president did not provide details on the specific measures that could be imposed on countries that violate the planned restrictions, and he did not identify any country other than Iran as a potential target.
Trump’s announcement comes days after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States was preparing to impose economic isolation on Iran on a scale “like the world has never seen before.”
The new pressure campaign follows continued disruption to international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route. Iran has maintained an effective blockade of the waterway after a proposed US-Iran agreement to reopen the corridor collapsed.
Although missile attacks have recently declined, tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high. Both sides have indicated in recent days that messages were being exchanged, raising speculation about possible diplomatic contacts.
However, Trump said Tuesday that talks were no longer taking place and separately suggested on social media that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz could become a “NEW U.S. Territory.”
The escalation comes as Trump faces increasing domestic political scrutiny over the conflict, with the November elections approaching and pressure mounting over the administration’s handling of the war.
