THE STRUGGLE OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS: BETWEEN SCHOOL AND SURVIVAL

BY CLINTON OSAYANDE IGHODALO

For many Nigerian students, going to school is more than attending lectures, writing examinations, and submitting assignments. It is also about learning how to survive while trying to build a better future.

Every morning, students leave their homes early, carrying their bags and hoping to make it to class on time. Some travel long distances to school, while others struggle with transportation costs, food, and other daily expenses. Despite these challenges, they still show up for lectures because they believe education can change their lives.

One of the biggest challenges students face is the rising cost of living. The prices of food, transportation, accommodation, and school materials continue to put pressure on students and their families. Some students are forced to reduce their spending on food just to have enough money for transportation to school.

For students who do not receive enough financial support from home, the situation can be even harder. Some take up small jobs, sell products online, or manage social media accounts while studying. Balancing work and school is not easy. After attending lectures during the day, they may have to work or study late at night.

Despite these difficulties, Nigerian students continue to push forward. Their determination can be seen in the way they attend classes, prepare for examinations, and look for opportunities to improve themselves.

“I know things are not easy, but I cannot give up because I want a better life,” a student said.

Education remains one of the strongest hopes for many young Nigerians. However, students need more than motivation. Affordable education, better learning facilities, employment opportunities, and financial support can make a major difference.

The story of the Nigerian student is therefore not simply a story about school. It is a story about dreams, sacrifice, and determination. Behind every student sitting in a classroom is a young person trying to build a future despite the challenges standing in the way.

For many of them, the journey may be difficult, but the hope remains the same: to graduate, succeed, and one day look back and know that all the struggles were worth it.
