Rwanda’s President, Paul Kagame, who also serves as the
Commander-in-Chief of the

Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), has given his approval for
the retirement of 95 military generals and senior officers, along with 930
junior soldiers. Leading the list of retirees is General James Kabarebe, the
former Minister of Defence and Chief of Defense Staff for the country.

This roster of personnel being retired was made public
through an official statement on the Rwanda Defense Force’s official website on
Wednesday. The timing of this announcement coincides with recent military coups
in the Niger Republic and Gabon.

General Kabarebe, before his retirement, held the role of
special advisor to the president on matters of security. Some of those retiring
have reached the age of 65, while others are being retired due to misconduct
issues, according to local media reports.

The statement also notes that President Kagame has authorized
the retirement of 83 senior officers, 6 junior officers, 86 senior
non-commissioned officers (NCOs), 678 end-of-contract personnel, and 160
medical discharges.

In the period leading up to their retirement, the Ugandan
president promoted several lieutenant colonels to the rank of colonels and
brigade commanders.

Although the specific reasons for the retirement of more than
600 military officers are not explicitly stated in the announcement, the
president had recently spoken to community leaders about the importance of
maintaining national unity.

President Kagame emphasized, “Our history has
demonstrated the destructive impact of division. Conversely, our transformation
as a nation has been driven by our unity. We have suffered the consequences of
division, with families torn apart and individuals on both sides of conflict.
The solution is unity. We must reject the harmful practice of division and
avoid self-destructive paths.”

In response to these developments, various users on X
(formerly Twitter) offered different perspectives. Some users speculated that
this retirement initiative was aimed at preventing potential coups, while
others praised the retiring soldiers for their decades of dedicated service to
the nation.
