Vice-President Kashim Shettima appealed to Nigerians for
their support regarding the forthcoming
solution that the federal government
plans to unveil for the escalating crisis in the North West region. The area
has been grappling with an upsurge in banditry, resulting in numerous
casualties and the displacement of thousands. Many stakeholders have been
advocating for an alternative approach to the government’s military strategy in
dealing with the crisis.
However, last week, the Chief of Army Staff, Maj. Gen.
Taoreed Lagbaja, expressed opposition to an amnesty program for bandits and
terrorists in the country. He argued that beneficiaries of such programs often
exploited them as an opportunity to regroup and launch further attacks on
innocent citizens.
During his visit to Kano on Sunday, the Vice President
emphasized that President Bola Tinubu is committed to redefining the principles
and practices of modern governance. He asserted that a military solution alone
cannot resolve the crisis in the North West.
Shettima stated, “The crisis we are facing in the North
West, compounded by poverty and social exclusion, is something that the
President is determined to confront head-on. In the coming weeks, he will
introduce a solution to address the situation.”
He further elaborated, “Unless we wish to engage in an
endless cycle of conflict, a purely military approach will not suffice to
tackle the crisis in the North West. We need both kinetic and non-kinetic
measures. President Bola Tinubu will soon unveil the Pulaku solution, which
aims to address the grievances and social exclusion faced by our Fulbe brethren
in the Northwest. This comprehensive strategy will target the root causes
behind the banditry and insurgency prevailing in our nation.”
During his condolence visit to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu
Ado Bayero, following the demise of Malam Imam Galadanci, who was related to
both the Sultan of Sokoto and the Emir of Bichi, Nasiru Ado Bayero, the Vice
President was warmly received by Kano state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf. At the
Emir’s palace, the Emir of Kano expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the
Vice President, expressing optimism that their policies and actions would
foster further development in the country.
