Grammy-winning Nigerian sensation, Burna Boy, faced a surprising defeat on October 3 at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards, held at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center. Despite his stellar career, the “African Giant” lost all seven of his nominations in various categories.
The highly-anticipated awards ceremony saw Burna Boy pitted against some of the biggest names in the hip-hop industry. In a surprising twist, he lost the Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, and Best Live Performer of the Year categories to the American rap legend, Kendrick Lamar. The competition was fierce, and Burna Boy faced further disappointment when he lost the title of Hustler of the Year to the iconic 50 Cent and the Best Collaboration of the Year for his track ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ featuring 21 Savage, which was clinched by Lil Durk and J. Cole with their hit ‘All My Life.’
Burna Boy’s losses continued as he fell short in the Best Hip Hop Video category for ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World,’ which was outshone by Lil Uzi Vert’s ‘Just Wanna Rock.’ Additionally, the Song of the Year award eluded him, once again going to ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World.’
In contrast, Kendrick Lamar emerged as the night’s undisputed champion, sweeping four prestigious awards. He dominated every category in which he was nominated, securing the titles of Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Best Live Performer, and Video Director of the Year, along with his collaborator, Dave Free.
Adding an international flavor to the event, Ghanaian music sensation Black Sherif clinched the award for the Best International Flow category, surpassing competitors from various regions, including South Africa’s late AKA and K.O, France’s Gazo and Ninho, and the UK’s J Hus and Central Cee, among others. The 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards provided a memorable evening filled with unexpected outcomes and well-deserved accolades for hip-hop’s finest talents.
