In the most recent release of the FIFA World Ranking on Friday, October 26, 2023, the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, held their ground at the 40th spot. This came as a relief for Nigerian football enthusiasts, as the team had experienced a slight setback in the previous ranking, dropping from 39th place. This shift had occurred despite a convincing 6-0 victory against São Tomé and Príncipe in the 2023 AFCON qualifier.
The Super Eagles managed to secure their 40th position in the global rankings after a series of international matches. During the last international break, Nigeria played to a 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia and clinched a 3-2 victory over Mozambique. These results contributed to the team’s ability to maintain their rank in the latest FIFA World Ranking.
In the African context, the Super Eagles retained their sixth place, with Morocco, the semi-finalist of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, taking the top position. Following closely, the African Cup of Nations champions, Senegal, held second place, with Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt rounding out the top five.
Looking at their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group, Nigeria’s opponents had mixed fortunes. Lesotho faced a drop in the rankings, falling from 151st to 153rd. South Africa, another team in the Super Eagles’ group, experienced a slight decline, moving from 63rd to 64th, while Zimbabwe maintained their 125th position. Benin Republic, another of Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying group opponents, remained in 93rd place, while Rwanda saw a small drop from 139th to 140th.
The top ten in the FIFA World Ranking remained unchanged, with all positions held by European and South American teams. Argentina, the 2022 FIFA World Cup winners, maintained their top spot, with France in second place and Brazil in third. The Three Lions of England secured fourth place, and Belgium completed the top five.
Football enthusiasts can look forward to the next FIFA/Coca-Cola world ranking, which is scheduled for release on November 30, 2023, providing updates on the shifting dynamics of the global football landscape.
