Renowned Nigerian singer, Inetimi Alfred, popularly known as Timaya, has candidly revealed his past battle with drug addiction during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.
In an exclusive interview with The Beat 99.9 FM, Lagos, shared on the station’s Instagram account on Thursday, Timaya disclosed how his encounter with Molly, a synthetic drug with psychedelic effects, marked the onset of his addiction.
The singer recounted being introduced to Molly by young individuals residing with him during the lockdown period. Initially drawn to the euphoric sensations it provided, Timaya admitted that his reliance on the drug soon spiraled out of control, resulting in adverse effects on his health and finances.
“I got introduced to drugs during the COVID-19 lockdown, in 2020,” Timaya disclosed. “And I was like, ‘Bro, how are you guys happier than me? I am the boss, I got money. What are you guys on?’ And they told me that they got Molly.”
Detailing the extent of his addiction, Timaya confessed to consuming three pills of Molly daily, likening it to medication. However, he soon realized the dire consequences of his dependency as it began to wreak havoc on his personal and professional life.
“I got kicked out of jobs, contracts… people I was doing business with did not want to work with me again,” Timaya lamented.
Reflecting on his journey to recovery, Timaya emphasized the arduous nature of breaking free from addiction. He highlighted the importance of natural happiness over artificial stimuli, urging others to seek genuine fulfillment rather than relying on substances.
Molly, scientifically known as 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, is recognized for its psychedelic properties, altering mood, perception, and awareness. Timaya’s courageous admission serves as a reminder of the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of seeking help in overcoming addiction.
