Nigeria’s iconic musician and cultural figure, Onyeka Onwenu, will be laid to rest today, following her passing on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72. The celebrated artist, affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion,” died at Reddington Hospital in Ikeja after collapsing during an event honoring Dr. Stella Okoli, Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
The funeral service, organized by her family, is scheduled to take place at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, with a private burial to follow at a vault in Ikoyi. According to CKN News, the Service of Songs will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, while the burial ceremony is set for 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Onyeka Onwenu was more than just a musical talent; she was a broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist who left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s cultural landscape. Her legacy is celebrated through her numerous hits and her contributions to the arts and public service. She is survived by her two sons, who, along with the rest of the nation, mourn the loss of a true icon.
