In a surprising turn of events, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the
National Chairman of the All Progressives
Congress (APC), reportedly tendered
his resignation on Sunday night. Speculations arose that Adamu was coerced into
submitting his resignation letter during President Bola Tinubu’s absence for an
African Union (AU) meeting in Kenya.
When approached by Daily Trust for comment on the
controversial development, Adamu refrained from addressing the matter until
President Tinubu’s return from the AU meeting. “I won’t discuss the issue
because the president is away,” he stated.
A reliable source disclosed that Adamu delivered his
resignation letter to President Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila,
around 4 pm on Sunday. “He has resigned. The letter, signed by him, has
been dispatched to the villa. Although the letter was addressed to President
Tinubu, it was sent to his chief of staff since the president is currently in
Kenya for the AU meeting,” the source revealed.
A close associate of Adamu also verified the development,
stating, “The national chairman stepped down due to a conspiracy by
individuals close to the president, aiming to embarrass him during the party’s
scheduled meetings tomorrow and Wednesday.”
However, the source refuted claims that President Tinubu had
demanded Adamu’s resignation in anticipation of the National Caucus and
National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings slated for the following days.
According to a founding member of the APC, Adamu relinquished
his position in response to reports that two influential party members were
mobilizing against him ahead of the NEC gathering. The politician explained,
“He resigned to shield himself from the impending humiliation, as they had
already begun gathering signatures to impeach him during the forthcoming
meetings.”
