Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has reacted sarcastically after Republican candidates suffered significant defeats in the 2026 midterm elections, despite receiving more than $474 million in financial support from him.
Musk, who invested heavily in Republican campaigns across the United States, took to his social media platform, X, on Wednesday, November 4, to make light of the election results.
“Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time,” Musk posted, shortly after Democrats secured major victories in Texas and other parts of the country.
In another post, the billionaire joked that relocating his data centres to space was becoming an attractive option, writing: “Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now.”
The election results marked a significant political setback for Musk, who had invested substantial resources in supporting Republican candidates, particularly in Texas.
According to campaign finance records analysed by CNBC, Musk contributed approximately $474 million to Republican candidates and political efforts, with about $224 million directed towards races in Texas.
The entrepreneur had backed Republican candidates Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton and Dan Patrick, hoping to maintain the party’s longstanding dominance in the state.
However, Democrats recorded historic victories, with James Talarico winning the Texas Senate race, Gina Hinojosa defeating Abbott in the gubernatorial contest and other Democratic candidates securing statewide offices.
Talarico, who reportedly secured 55 per cent of the vote, directly addressed wealthy political donors during his victory speech.
“We just sent a message to every billionaire mega-donor, every trillionaire mega-donor, every corrupt defender of this broken political system,” he said.
Musk’s involvement in the midterm elections followed his earlier decision to withdraw from active political spending after a public disagreement with President Donald Trump.
The two men subsequently appeared to reconcile, attending Charlie Kirk’s memorial service in September 2025 and travelling together during Trump’s state visit to China in May 2026.
In July, Trump’s senior political adviser James Blair described Musk’s political operation as an essential partner in the Republican Party’s electoral efforts, predicting that his financial support would provide a significant boost to Republican candidates.
Musk’s latest reaction comes amid renewed scrutiny of the influence of wealthy donors in American politics, particularly following the Democrats’ strong performance in the midterm elections.
