In the current Nigerian economy, making money has become increasingly difficult. High inflation and the declining value of the naira continue to pose significant financial challenges for many Nigerians.

Building wealth in Nigeria today is no longer solely about traditional 9-to-5 employment. It also involves identifying and solving specific problems, developing valuable skills and exploring opportunities to earn in foreign currencies.

In my opinion, achieving financial stability in Nigeria requires diversifying income sources rather than relying entirely on naira-denominated earnings. Earning in foreign currencies can offer greater purchasing power when converted to naira, although exchange rates and other costs must be considered.

Successful entrepreneurs can treat their skills as global commodities while keeping their operational costs relatively low.

Solutions to Consider

  1. Content Creation and Monetisation

Content creation is a popular way to build an audience through consistent, engaging material. Opportunities include comedy, scriptwriting and other forms of creative content.

Creators who produce valuable and engaging content can explore monetisation opportunities across suitable platforms.

  1. Digital Skills and Freelancing

Offering digital services to international clients can provide opportunities to earn in US dollars or euros. Relevant skills include copywriting, social media management, scriptwriting and digital advertising.

  1. E-Commerce and Social Selling

Selling physical goods through platforms such as WhatsApp Business, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook can help entrepreneurs reach customers, advertise products and grow their businesses without necessarily operating a traditional physical shop.

Steps to Get Started

  1. Master a High-Value Skill

Learn marketable skills such as copywriting and scriptwriting. Dedicate 30 to 90 days to learning and practising a chosen skill, depending on its complexity and your progress.

  1. Build a Portfolio

Create samples of your work or develop advertisements showcasing your products and services. A strong portfolio helps potential clients and customers assess your capabilities and builds confidence in what you offer.

  1. Establish Your Presence on Local and Global Platforms

Use social media to showcase your expertise, products and services. Treat your personal social media accounts as professional platforms for building your reputation and attracting customers.

  1. Pitch Your Services and Build Networks

Do not wait for clients or customers to discover you. Reach out directly to business owners, content creators and agencies, explaining how your skills or services can solve their specific problems.

  1. Reinvest and Scale Your Business

Once you begin earning, reinvest a portion of your income into improving your business. For example, allocating 20 per cent towards better equipment, a smartphone upgrade, a reliable 5G router or essential software subscriptions can help improve productivity and service delivery.

Conclusion

Making money in Nigeria requires strategic thinking, continuous skills development and a commitment to providing value. By exploring digital opportunities, building strong professional networks and diversifying income sources, individuals can work towards creating sustainable livelihoods.

Consistency, patience and the willingness to keep learning are essential. With the right strategy and dedication, it is possible to build a sustainable income despite the economic challenges.
