The recently inaugurated Minister of the Federal Capital
Territory (FCT), Nyesome
Wike, emphasized on Monday that his presence in Abuja
isn’t merely symbolic for the party; rather, he is committed to vigorous
efforts aimed at delivering democratic benefits to the populace.
Upon assuming his duties at the FCTA in tandem with the FCT
Minister of State, Mariya Mahmoud, immediately following the swearing-in
ceremony at the Presidential Villa, Wike expressed his unwavering determination
to eradicate all illicit structures that violate the Abuja Master Plan.
Wike’s response regarding the party affiliation his official
vehicle will represent has further intensified conjecture about his membership
status within the political party.
He articulated that his tenure as the FCT Minister will place
special emphasis on initiatives designed to restore the capital city’s former
splendor in alignment with the aspirations of its founding figures.
He additionally cautioned that profiteering from land
dealings would no longer prevail, as stringent resistance awaits those engaged
in land speculation.
“Our mission is to restore FCT to its rightful status.
Numerous individuals have voiced concerns that the current state of FCT does
not align with the vision of its pioneers. Addressing security concerns is
paramount. FCT should be a prime destination for leisure.”
He firmly communicated that his administration will hold
security agencies accountable without entertaining excuses, equipping them
adequately due to the central importance of security.
The minister also revealed plans to cleanse the city and put
an end to the proliferation of slums and makeshift settlements throughout the
urban landscape. The city of Abuja has unfortunately transformed into an
enclave of slums. The prevailing sanitation conditions, characterized by
scattered waste, are unsatisfactory. This situation cannot be tolerated. Our
focus will extend to waste management concerns.”
“Structures erected in inappropriate zones will be
dismantled. The restoration of green spaces and parks is a priority.
“The era of land speculation and exploitation is now
history. Those who have chosen to refrain from development and instead engage
in land speculation will forfeit their holdings. These immediate objectives
will help to rebuild public confidence in the government.”
