India Beats Nigeria to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games as Africa’s Wait Continues

India has secured the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, defeating Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, in a tightly contested bid that ended on Wednesday, marking another missed opportunity for Africa to stage the century-old global sporting event.

The Commonwealth Sport Executive Board announced Ahmedabad, the capital of Gujarat State in western India, as the preferred host city after extensive deliberations. The decision will be formally ratified at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26.

This will be India’s second time hosting the prestigious competition since the 2010 Games in New Delhi.

Ahmedabad’s bid gained strong support due to its modern infrastructure and global sporting reputation. The city is home to the Narendra Modi Stadium — the world’s largest sports venue with a 132,000-seat capacity — which recently hosted the 2023 Cricket World Cup final. With a population exceeding five million and significant investment in sports facilities, Ahmedabad is now seen as a potential future Olympic Games candidate.

Reacting to the announcement, Dr. P. T. Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, described the victory as “a defining moment for India and the Commonwealth.”

“We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships, and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth,” she said.

For Nigeria, the outcome represents a setback in its long-standing ambition to bring the Commonwealth Games to Africa for the first time. Despite widespread calls for the Games to make their debut on the continent, Abuja’s proposal fell short in the final evaluation round.

President Bola Tinubu had in July 2025 publicly endorsed Nigeria’s bid, pledging full federal support and positioning the Games as a showcase of the nation’s progress, unity, and readiness to host large-scale international events.

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) formally submitted its expression of interest on March 28, 2025, describing Abuja’s vision as “a compelling narrative of transformation and national development.”

However, this marks the second time Abuja has lost a Commonwealth Games bid after its unsuccessful attempt to host the 2014 edition, which went to Glasgow.

Sports analysts have described the decision as a “missed opportunity” for Africa, which has never hosted the Games in their 100-year history. Some, however, commended Nigeria’s effort, noting that its growing interest in hosting international sports events demonstrates progress in infrastructure and regional cooperation.

Ahmedabad’s hosting of the centenary edition in 2030 is expected to draw record participation, with over 70 nations anticipated to compete across 20 sporting disciplines.
