The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has released former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi’s 2014 handover document, which he said showed that the state had a net financial balance of N86.67 billion at the end of Obi’s tenure.

Tanko published the document on X on Wednesday amid an ongoing dispute between Obi and the Anambra State Government over inherited loans, debts and other financial obligations from previous administrations.

The document, dated March 17, 2014, was addressed by Obi to his successor, the late Governor Willie Obiano. It contained a summary of Anambra State’s financial position as of the close of business on March 14, 2014, described as the final working day of Obi’s administration.

According to the report, local investments stood at N27 billion, while foreign currency investments of $156 million were valued at N26.5 billion.

The document also listed certified balances belonging to the state and its Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) at N28.17 billion, alongside a Federal Government-approved refund of N10 billion.

After accounting for the liabilities listed in the document, the report recorded a “NET BALANCE” of N86,665,985,574.06.

In the covering letter to Obiano, Obi stated that he was forwarding a summary of the state’s full financial statement as of the close of business on March 14, 2014, along with copies of the supporting documents.

While releasing the report, Tanko called on other former governors of Anambra State to make their respective handover documents public.

“Let other governors, from 1999 till date, have the courage to publish their handover notes to their successors, as Peter Obi has done. Be accountable to the people,” Tanko said.

The publication comes against the backdrop of claims by the Anambra State Government that it continues to service loans and other financial obligations inherited from previous administrations, including obligations associated with projects undertaken during Obi’s tenure.

Obi has disputed those claims, maintaining that his administration left no outstanding salaries, pensions or gratuities. He has also said that contractors responsible for duly executed and certified projects were paid.

“If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will stop campaigning,” Obi said in response to the allegations.

The Anambra State Government has continued to maintain its position regarding inherited financial obligations, leaving the details of the state’s historical liabilities at the centre of the ongoing debate.
