The football community was plunged into mourning on Thursday following the reported death of Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota in a tragic car accident in Spain. He was 28 years old.
According to reports from Portuguese media and the UK’s Daily Mail, Jota was traveling with his younger brother, André Jota, 26, also a professional footballer, when their car crashed along the A-52 highway near Cernadilla, in the Castilla y León region of northwest Spain.
Emergency services confirmed the fatal crash. A statement from Spanish authorities said:
“The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received multiple calls around midnight reporting a serious accident at kilometer 65 of the A-52 highway. Upon arrival, responders found a vehicle engulfed in flames. Both occupants were declared dead at the scene.”
Local police believe the vehicle may have suffered a mechanical failure or tire blowout before veering off the road and igniting. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.
The tragic incident occurred just two weeks after Jota’s wedding to his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, in a private ceremony held in Porto, Portugal. The couple were known for maintaining a low profile despite Jota’s prominence in the football world.
Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, quickly became a fan favorite with his sharp attacking prowess and versatility. Over his time at Anfield, he made over 180 appearances and scored more than 60 goals, playing a key role in the club’s Premier League and FA Cup campaigns.
His brother André, although less internationally known, was a rising star in Portuguese football circles, having recently signed with a second-division club.
Tributes have already begun pouring in from fans, teammates, and football clubs around the world. Liverpool FC is expected to issue an official statement, while the Premier League has been asked to consider observing a minute of silence in upcoming fixtures.
Jota’s death adds to a growing list of footballers lost at the peak of their careers, highlighting the often-unspoken vulnerabilities faced by even the brightest stars of the sport.
Further details, including funeral arrangements and official club statements, are expected in the coming days.
