Victory Gbakara emerged as the triumphant winner of the
eighth edition of Nigerian Idol, the country’s
most popular singing
competition. The intense competition, which aired on DStv and GOtv starting
from April 23, began with over 10,000 hopefuls, eventually narrowing down to 29
contestants and then the final top 10 contenders.
As the winner, Victory was bestowed with the prestigious
grand prize, which included ₦35 million in cash, a brand new SUV, a Bigi
Refrigerator, a year’s supply of Bigi soft drink, an all-expenses-paid trip
courtesy of Tecno, a music record deal from a reputable label that entailed a
video shoot, a one-year supply of WAW detergent, and a fully installed DStv
Explora with a one-year Premium subscription.
Joining the elite group of previous winners from the show’s
2021 return, Victory Gbakara now shares the limelight with talented alumni such
as Kingdom Kroseide, who claimed the title in 2021, and Progress Chukwuyem, the
winner of the previous year.
Reflecting on Victory’s performances throughout the season,
one of the judges, Obi-Asika, commented, “Victory Gbakara has always been
a star, and his potential was evident right from the audition stage. We, the
judges, are proud to have witnessed his growth throughout the competition,
leading him to emerge as the ultimate winner.”
John Ugbe, the CEO of MultiChoice West Africa, expressed his
thoughts on the significant impact of Nigerian Idol, stating, “Nigerian
Idol has become a powerful platform for investing in the Nigerian entertainment
industry and has grown into a vehicle for exceptional aspiring singers who can
make a mark. With the industry projected to reach $14.82 billion by 2025, we
need to be deliberate about its trajectory and how young Nigerians will
contribute to that future. Nigeria is rich with creative ingenuity and musical
talent that can shape the world, and we are proud to play a role in actualizing
this dream for thousands across the country. We are invested in doing even
more.”
The 2023 edition, hosted by renowned media personality IK
Osakioduwa, featured three judges: music executive Obi Asika, singer-songwriter
Simi, and award-winning artist D’banj. Since its inception in 2011, Nigerian
Idol has served as a launchpad for young aspiring singers in Nigeria,
propelling them into the music industry. It has evolved beyond a mere
entertainment show, becoming an influential trendsetter within the African
music industry and a strategic investment in the sector.
Still overwhelmed by his victory, Victory expressed gratitude
to the show’s organizers and fans for the life-changing opportunity. He stated,
“I can’t contain my joy. I am so happy, guys. This journey has been a
life-changing experience, and it would not have been possible without the
support and love of my family, friends, and especially my incredible
fans.”
Dr. Busola Tejumola, the Head of Content and West Africa
Channels at MultiChoice, emphasized the impact of Nigerian Idol, saying,
“At MultiChoice, we are very intentional about what our content can do for
our audience and the community at large. Beyond its entertainment value,
Nigerian Idol is a catalyst for economic growth, enriching lives, and we are
thrilled to be a part of Victory Gbakara’s journey.”
Nigerian Idol contributes to the Nigerian music industry both
economically and through talent development. As a rapidly growing sector in the
entertainment industry, music has helped elevate Nigeria’s image and contribute
significantly to the country’s GDP. With rising stars like Victory Gbakara
creating exceptional music that appeals to a global audience, the industry’s
revenue is projected to increase. According to Statista, Nigeria’s music
revenue grew from $26 million in 2014 to $34 million in 2018, and by 2023, it
is expected to reach $44 million.
MultiChoice Nigeria, through Nigerian Idol and other music
programs and channels, contributes to the growth of the sector by providing employment
opportunities for hundreds of production members, stylists, makeup artists, and
musicians involved in the show.
The grand finale showcased performances from the top 10
contestants, as well as acclaimed singer Simi, ballad king Johnny Drille, rising
star Fave, and Nigerian Idol Season 7 winner Progress.
Bigi Drinks and Tecno Mobile proudly sponsored the eighth
edition of Nigerian Idol, reaffirming their commitment to supporting the music
industry.
