Zenith Bank Plc has made a historic announcement, appointing Dr. Adaora Umeoji as its new Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. The news came to light on Tuesday through a statement signed by the company secretary, Michael Otu, and filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited.

Dr. Umeoji’s appointment is set to commence on June 1, 2024, following the conclusion of the tenure of the current GMD, Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, on May 31, 2024. Her elevation marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first female GMDCEO in the history of Zenith Bank.

According to the statement, Umeoji’s appointment reflects the bank’s commitment to its executive transition tradition, succession plan, and strategy of nurturing leaders from within. Prior to her latest role, Umeoji served as the Deputy Managing Director of Zenith Bank since October 28, 2016. With close to three decades of banking experience, out of which she spent 26 years at Zenith Bank, she brings a wealth of expertise to her new position.

Umeoji’s academic achievements further underscore her qualifications for the role. She is an alumnus of the prestigious Harvard Business School, having completed the Advanced Management Programme. Additionally, she holds a certificate in the Global Banking Program from Columbia Business School. Her educational journey includes a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Jos, a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, and a first-class honours degree in law from Baze University, Abuja. She furthered her studies with a Master of Laws from the University of Salford, United Kingdom, and a Master in Business Administration from the University of Calabar. Notably, Umeoji also holds a doctorate in business administration from Apollos University, USA.

In addition to her academic accomplishments, Umeoji has augmented her knowledge through various management programs at renowned universities worldwide. She has completed the strategic thinking and management program at Wharton Business School, USA, and holds a Certificate in Economics for Business from the esteemed MIT Sloan School of Management.

The appointment of Dr. Adaora Umeoji as Zenith Bank’s new GMDCEO signals a significant moment for the banking industry, emphasizing the bank’s commitment to diversity and leadership excellence.
