Donald Trump, the billionaire Republican and former president, arrived in Washington, D.C., on Saturday ahead of his Monday inauguration, marking a return to the White House. Trump was accompanied by his wife, Melania, and other family members as they landed at Dulles International Airport, gearing up for a series of events before officially reclaiming the presidency.
Private Celebrations and Early Agenda
Upon arrival, Trump headed to his golf club in Virginia for a private event that included a fireworks display. This marked the beginning of a weekend filled with pre-inauguration activities.
Speaking to NBC News earlier in the day, Trump revealed his plans to sign a record number of executive orders immediately after his swearing-in. “We’re going to start signing right after the inaugural address,” he said, adding that the number of orders will be “record-setting,” possibly exceeding 100.
The president-elect’s orders are expected to roll back many policies of outgoing President Joe Biden, with immigration and economic measures taking precedence.
Immigration Crackdown on Day One
Trump reiterated his intention to launch a mass deportation program targeting undocumented migrants. “The expulsion of undocumented migrants will begin very, very quickly,” he told NBC, refusing to disclose specific cities to maintain operational secrecy.
Tom Homan, Trump’s designated “border czar,” told The Washington Post that plans for raids are being re-evaluated following media leaks. Reports had suggested a large-scale operation in Chicago was planned for Tuesday. However, Homan clarified, “We’re looking at this leak and will make a decision based on it.”
Homan emphasized that arrests would focus on individuals deemed “public safety threats” and would begin “uninhibited by any prior administration guidelines.”
Weather Alters Inauguration Plans
Traditionally held on the steps of the U.S. Capitol overlooking the National Mall, Trump’s inauguration ceremony has been moved indoors due to an unusually cold weather forecast. “I think we made the right decision,” Trump told NBC, citing safety concerns for attendees.
Weekend Schedule and Public Reactions
Ahead of Monday’s inauguration, Trump is slated to participate in several symbolic and celebratory events. On Sunday, he is scheduled to lay a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery and address a rally of his supporters in Washington. A dinner event will also feature a speech by the president-elect.
Meanwhile, protests against Trump’s policies intensified in the nation’s capital. Thousands marched through Washington streets on Saturday, voicing opposition to his administration’s agenda.
As Trump prepares to retake the helm of the U.S. government, his controversial policies and decisions have already sparked nationwide debate, setting the tone for a contentious new term in office.
