UK-Based Nigerian Replaces Allegedly Stolen Shoes and Watch for Kemi Badenoch’s Brother

James Akinwande, a Nigerian living in the United Kingdom, has made headlines by purchasing and delivering a new pair of shoes and a wristwatch to replace items allegedly stolen from the brother of Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party.

The gesture came after Badenoch revealed in a recent interview that her brother had his shoes and wristwatch stolen by officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Although Badenoch did not specify when the alleged incident occurred, she criticized the broader issue of police misconduct in Nigeria, stating, “Giving people a gun is just a license to intimidate.”

Akinwande’s Response

In a widely circulated video, Akinwande documented his purchase of the replacements. He visited a store in the UK, bought the items, and personally delivered them to the Conservative Party headquarters.

At the pedestrian gate, Akinwande handed the shoes and wristwatch to security personnel with instructions to pass them on to Badenoch. The video ended with a message:

“On behalf of every proud Nigerian who felt genuinely hurt by those unfounded disparaging remarks about the Nigerian Police, we ‘buy back’ the stolen shoes and watch! (I hope it fits, tho..).”

Badenoch’s Comments and Backlash

Kemi Badenoch, born Olukemi Adegoke to Nigerian Yoruba parents, grew up in Nigeria before returning to the UK at age 16. She has often been critical of Nigeria’s leadership and systemic challenges, drawing both praise and condemnation.

Her comments about her brother’s alleged experience with the Nigerian police reignited debates about her stance on her heritage. Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima and others have rebuked her for what they perceive as “constantly denigrating” her homeland.

The Man Behind the Gesture

James Akinwande, who describes himself on Instagram as a legal representative, golfer, and international manager for Nigerian comedian Kenny Blaq, has worked with several high-profile Nigerian entertainers, including AY Makun and Woli Arole. His act was seen as both a humorous and symbolic rebuttal to Badenoch’s remarks, with many Nigerians praising his effort to defend the reputation of the NPF.

Social Media Reactions

The video has sparked mixed reactions online. While some applauded Akinwande for standing up for Nigeria, others criticized his action as trivializing the broader issues raised by Badenoch.

One commenter wrote:

“This is the kind of energy we need—light-hearted but meaningful responses to false narratives.”

Another added:

“Replacing shoes and a watch doesn’t address the real issues within the Nigerian police force.”

Ongoing Debate

As the video continues to gain traction, it highlights the ongoing tension between Nigerians in the diaspora and their relationship with their homeland. The incident underscores broader conversations about national pride, accountability, and the complexities of identity in a globalized world.
