Horror on Enugu-Onitsha Expressway as Petrol Tanker Explosion Kills 18

In a heart-wrenching incident, a petrol tanker explosion on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway claimed the lives of at least 18 people, including three children, on January 25, 2025. The tragedy unfolded near the Ugwu Onyeama section of the road at approximately 11:30 am, plunging the state into mourning.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that the explosion was triggered by a brake failure in the petrol tanker. The accident involved 17 vehicles—15 cars, a water tanker, and the petrol tanker itself. The ensuing inferno destroyed 11 vehicles, while 13 people were rescued, some with severe injuries. Unfortunately, 18 victims were burned beyond recognition.

Olusegun Ogungbemide, spokesperson for the FRSC, painted a grim picture of the incident, stating, “Some of the victims were attempting to escape when the fire overtook them.”

A Scene of Chaos and Desperation

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as thick black smoke billowed into the sky, and flames engulfed the area. Rescue efforts were hampered by the intense heat, which made it nearly impossible for bystanders and first responders to access the worst-affected zones.

Emergency services worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and rescue survivors, while the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Governor Visits the Scene, Promises Action

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, visited the site of the explosion shortly after the incident. Expressing profound sorrow over the loss of lives, he described the tragedy as “heartbreaking” and assured swift government intervention.

“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families. The state government has already initiated measures to ensure all injured persons receive comprehensive medical attention, with the state covering their treatment costs,” Governor Mbah announced.

He also highlighted plans to enforce stricter safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. “We are mandating the use of anti-spill locks on all tankers transporting flammable substances. Tankers found without these safety features will be removed from our roads immediately,” he stated.

To ensure compliance, the governor directed the Enugu FRSC Sector Commander, Mr. Franklin Agbakoba, and the Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Obi Ozor, to oversee the enforcement of these safety protocols.

A Grim Trend of Tanker Explosions

This incident marks the third major tanker-related tragedy in Nigeria this month alone. Earlier accidents in Niger and Delta states claimed nearly 100 and five lives, respectively.

FRSC spokesperson Ogungbemide emphasized the urgency of improving safety standards for tanker transport. “These recurring accidents highlight the need for immediate reforms to protect lives on our highways,” he said.

Investigation Underway

Preliminary investigations suggest that the tanker’s brake failure led to its loss of control, culminating in the catastrophic explosion. Law enforcement agencies and safety experts are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances and identify any further contributing factors.

As the community mourns, questions loom over how to prevent such tragedies in the future. For now, the focus remains on caring for the survivors, identifying the deceased, and implementing measures to avert similar incidents.

The tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the need for stringent enforcement of road safety laws and proactive measures to safeguard lives across Nigeria’s highways.
