Mojisola Meranda has officially taken office as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking a new chapter in the legislative body. Her assumption was met with overwhelming support from her colleagues, who accompanied her to the Speaker’s office in a show of unity.
Notably absent from the ceremony was former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, whose removal has been surrounded by controversy. Despite his claims that the impeachment process was unconstitutional, Meranda’s leadership has garnered strong backing from the House members.
Lawmakers Rally Behind Meranda
In a symbolic act of solidarity, the lawmakers gathered around Meranda, chanting in unison to affirm her position.
“Madam, continue your work; your work is appealing to us. You are the Speaker, you are the Speaker, you are the Speaker,” they chorused, encouraging her to advocate for the interests of Lagos.
The celebration extended to her formal office, where the lawmakers joined her in prayers as she began her tenure. This gesture underscored their collective optimism for her leadership and her ability to steer the Assembly toward its legislative goals.
Security Reinforced at Assembly Premises
In light of the recent leadership change, security around the Lagos State House of Assembly has been significantly tightened. Measures have been put in place to ensure the safety and smooth functioning of the legislative body.
A directive issued by Omotayo Adekemi, on behalf of Acting Clerk Taiwo Ottun, emphasized strict access control.
“Following management directives, all staff members and legislative aides must present valid identity cards to access the House premises. Entry will be denied anyone without a valid ID card. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding,” the notice read.
Additionally, the Lagos State Police Command has ramped up efforts to maintain peace outside the Assembly and across the state.
“While the Police have no business inside the Assembly, it is our duty to ensure calmness outside the premises and throughout Lagos,” said Ishola Olawale, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.
Backdrop of Controversy
Meranda’s assumption of office follows days of tension after Obasa’s removal. The former Speaker has contested the legality of his impeachment, claiming it did not follow due process. However, the Assembly’s members appear resolute in moving forward under Meranda’s leadership.
As the dust settles, Lagosians will be watching closely to see how Meranda’s tenure unfolds and whether it can bring stability and progress to the Assembly amid lingering political drama.
