Abuja, Nigeria – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday arrested Professor Usman Yusuf, a former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), at his Abuja residence.
The former NHIS chief, known for his background in haematology-oncology and bone marrow transplantation, was taken into custody by armed EFCC operatives at approximately 4:46 p.m. in the presence of his wife and children.
Details of Arrest Remain Unclear
Though the specific charges against Yusuf have not been publicly disclosed, sources suggest that his detention may be linked to allegations of financial mismanagement during his tenure at NHIS.
A source close to the investigation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated:
“The details of his arrest are still classified as investigations are ongoing. However, he is currently in custody and will assist detectives in their inquiries.”
Previous Allegations of Corruption
Professor Yusuf was dismissed in 2019 by former President Muhammadu Buhari following a fact-finding panel’s recommendation for his removal over allegations of mismanagement of N919 million.
His tenure at NHIS was fraught with controversy, including accusations of financial irregularities and abuse of office, which led to his suspension in 2018 before his eventual dismissal.
Next Steps in the Investigation
The EFCC is expected to interrogate Yusuf regarding his activities at NHIS, particularly concerning the alleged financial misappropriation. It remains unclear whether he will be formally charged or released after questioning.
Meanwhile, the anti-graft agency has yet to release an official statement regarding the arrest.
