Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has called for further improvements from his team despite their 2-0 victory over Rwanda in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday in Kigali.
The match, a key fixture in Group C, saw Nigeria secure an important win against the Amavubi of Rwanda, bolstering their chances of qualification. However, speaking at the post-match press conference, Chelle acknowledged that while he was pleased with the team’s performance, there is still room for growth as they prepare for their next match against Zimbabwe.
Chelle Praises Players but Stresses Need for Growth
“It was a difficult game because Rwanda is a good side. I know their coach; he is a good coach. We also had a great game,” Chelle said. “I am so happy and proud of my players, my guys, and the Nigerian people.”
Despite his satisfaction with the result, the Franco-Malian tactician emphasized that the team must refine their tactics and execution before their next fixture in Uyo on Tuesday. Nigeria will take on Zimbabwe, who currently sit at the bottom of the group, in another crucial encounter.
Victory Was a Result of Tactical Preparation
Chelle credited the team’s preparation for their success, noting that intensive video analysis and strategic planning contributed to their win.
“We worked a lot in the last week, sourcing information for the players with multiple video sessions after just two training practices,” he revealed. “I think the victory was well deserved because in the first half, they had only one clear chance to score.”
He further explained the team’s adaptability, stating, “We kept the ball well in the second half and played two to three different systems. But this is just one game—we still have areas to improve. My job is to refine our game plan moving forward.”
Next Challenge: Zimbabwe in Uyo
With three crucial points in hand, the Super Eagles will now shift focus to their upcoming match against Zimbabwe on Tuesday. Chelle and his squad will be looking to build momentum and further strengthen their position in the qualification race.
As the World Cup qualifiers progress, fans will be eager to see how the Super Eagles respond to Chelle’s demand for improvement and whether they can maintain their winning form on home soil.
