The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away at the age of 90, just two days after celebrating his milestone birthday and nearly a year after his coronation.
Sources close to the royal family confirmed that the revered monarch died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025. His death marks the end of a brief but notable reign as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin was officially crowned on July 12, 2024, and presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde. His ascension followed a respected tradition in Ibadan’s unique chieftaincy system, which remains one of the most orderly and seniority-based succession systems in Nigeria.
The monarch’s one-year reign was marked by efforts to foster peace and cultural pride within Ibadan and among the Yoruba people. His passing has thrown the ancient city into mourning, as traditional rites are expected to commence immediately.
Oba Olakulehin’s contributions to Ibadanland and his legacy as a custodian of Yoruba heritage will be remembered for generations. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the Ibadan traditional council.
