U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, declaring that the North African nation’s autonomy plan remains the only viable basis for resolving the decades-long territorial dispute.
In a message of congratulations to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of Morocco’s Throne Day — marking the 26th anniversary of his ascension to the throne — President Trump reaffirmed America’s stance on the contested region. His remarks were reported by Morocco’s state news agency, MAP, on Saturday.
“I reiterate that the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute,” Trump said in his message to the King.
The U.S. first recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020 under Trump’s administration, in parallel with Rabat’s agreement to normalize relations with Israel through the Abraham Accords.
In his Throne Day message, President Trump praised the longstanding ties between Washington and Rabat, highlighting cooperation in security, trade, and counterterrorism.
“The United States deeply values our strong and enduring partnership with Morocco,” Trump wrote. “Together, we are advancing shared priorities for peace and security in the region, including by building on the Abraham Accords, combatting terrorism, and expanding commercial cooperation that benefits both Americans and Moroccans.”
The U.S. President added that he looked forward to “continuing our collaboration to promote regional stability, prosperity, and peace.”
The Throne Day celebration, observed annually on July 30, is one of Morocco’s most important national holidays and serves as a reaffirmation of loyalty between the monarchy and its citizens.
