Kirikiri Remand: NBA Condemns ‘Dehumanising’ Treatment of Ibom Air Passenger, Challenges Lifetime Ban

LAGOS — Comfort Bob, the Ibom Air passenger at the centre of a recent airport altercation, has begun life inside the female wing of Kirikiri Prison following her remand by a Lagos court. She arrived at the facility around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, escorted by officers from the Airport Command, Ikeja, under a remand order set to expire on October 6.

Prison officials confirmed that the 26-year-old student was processed as a first-time offender and placed in a section separate from other inmates. According to a senior prison source, Comfort appeared calm, showed little visible emotion, and carried her luggage upon arrival.

“She was given the standard briefing on prison rules and offered a choice of vocational and educational programmes,” the source told Vanguard. “Even if someone is here for just a few weeks, they’re encouraged to learn a skill. Inmates awaiting trial now have access to these opportunities, not just convicted prisoners.”

The source added that Comfort does not qualify for “VIP” status under prison guidelines, despite the public attention generated by the airport incident.

NBA Slams Lifetime Flight Ban, Promises Legal Support

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) yesterday strongly criticised what it described as the “reckless and unlawful” treatment meted out to Comfort, whose sensitive body parts were exposed in a viral video following her removal from the aircraft.

In a statement signed by NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, and Secretary-General, Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara, the association condemned both the handling of the incident and the indefinite ‘no-fly’ ban imposed by Ibom Air and the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON).

“It is deeply disturbing that Ms. Comfort was forcibly removed from the aircraft, stripped of her clothing in public, and subjected to humiliation that was filmed and circulated online,” the NBA said. “Such conduct is degrading, violates her right to dignity and privacy, and falls far short of the standards of civility and professionalism expected in the aviation sector. No person, regardless of the circumstances, should be treated in such a dehumanising manner.”

The NBA pledged to provide Comfort with legal representation and to challenge what it called an “arbitrary and unjust” sanction.

NCAA Distinguishes Incident from KWAM 1 Case

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) pushed back against public comparisons between Comfort’s case and the August 5 airport confrontation involving Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also known as KWAM 1. The agency insisted that the two incidents were “materially different” in nature and circumstances.

Comfort’s remand follows allegations that she caused a disturbance aboard an Ibom Air flight, leading to her forcible removal before takeoff. The incident and its aftermath have sparked nationwide debate over passenger rights, airline conduct, and the limits of disciplinary measures in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
