The Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sami Goma II, has died at the age of 81. The revered monarch passed away on Saturday night at a London hospital following a brief illness.
Kebbi State’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Abubakar Dustin Mari, confirmed the development in an official statement issued late Saturday.
“We regret to announce the passing of the Emir of Zuru. He was a courageous traditional ruler. The late Emir is survived by four wives and seven children,” the commissioner stated.
The Kebbi State Government has expressed deep condolences to the Emir’s immediate family, the Zuru Emirate Council, and the people of Kebbi State. The government described his death as a monumental loss to the state, noting his leadership, wisdom, and commitment to cultural preservation.
Governor Nasir Idris and other top government officials are expected to pay tribute in the coming days, while preparations for the burial are underway. The state government noted that funeral arrangements will be announced after consultations with the family and the emirate.
The late Emir, who reigned for decades, was widely respected as a custodian of tradition and a bridge between modern governance and cultural heritage. His death marks the end of an era for the Zuru Emirate, one of the prominent traditional institutions in Kebbi State.
The government has called on the people of the state to keep the family and emirate in their prayers, while asking Allah to grant the late Emir eternal rest and his loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
