The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has pushed back against remarks made by Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, describing his criticism of the opposition coalition as “personal” and not reflective of the ADC’s stance.
In a statement issued by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Jackie Wayas, the ADC maintained that the coalition of opposition forces remains strong and committed to offering Nigerians a credible alternative to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Baba-Ahmed, during a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, had accused the coalition of deceiving Nigerians and dismissed its chances of rescuing the country from underdevelopment. He also declared his readiness to run alongside Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential race.
Responding, the ADC stressed that the opposition alliance was not built on individual ambitions but on collective consultations among key political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Senator David Mark, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mr. Peter Obi.
“These leaders came together after broad consultations to put national interest above partisan divides and to chart a path for competent and compassionate leadership,” the statement read.
The party highlighted that Peter Obi had already endorsed the coalition under the ADC platform for 2027, reinforcing the group’s commitment to dismantling entrenched systems of poverty, insecurity, and bad governance. Obi had also emphasized that no single party or personality could transform Nigeria alone, urging unity of purpose.
Clarifying its position, the ADC dismissed Baba-Ahmed’s remarks as his “personal opinions” and not representative of the broader coalition.
“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed’s assertions are his personal opinions and do not reflect the position of the ADC or its coalition partners,” Wayas stated.
Despite its rebuttal, the party extended an invitation to Baba-Ahmed, describing him as a respected voice in Nigerian politics and urging him to join the coalition effort.
“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed has always stood for integrity and justice. Since the coalition is a collective effort that requires the strength and skills of all patriots, we sincerely hope he comes on board to contribute to this shared vision for a better Nigeria,” Wayas added.
Reiterating its mission, the ADC called on Nigerians to rally behind the coalition, stressing that unity remains the only path to national renewal.
“Nigerians deserve clarity and unity in the pursuit of a better future. Let us rally behind the ADC and rescue Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
