After more than a decade of inactivity, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has officially resumed construction work on the Abuja Centenary City project, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s most ambitious urban development initiative.
The return to site follows the signing of a contract for Phase 1 of the project’s primary infrastructure, signaling renewed momentum for the city, which was first unveiled in 2014 as a symbol of Nigeria’s modern aspirations.
The Abuja Centenary City, designed as a global lifestyle hub, is expected to feature five-star hotels, luxury residences, an International Commerce Centre, the Centenary International Convention Centre, the Mall of Africa, and a championship golf course.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Managing Director of Abuja Centenary City, Dr. Odenigwe Ike Michaels, said the choice of Julius Berger was informed by its track record in executing landmark projects across Nigeria.
“Julius Berger’s reputation for delivering excellence is unmatched. I challenge the company to surpass its own standards because today marks the beginning of a new era for the Centenary City after an 11-year wait,” Michaels stated. He described the project as Abuja’s leading urban renewal effort, aimed at attracting global investors while shaping the capital into a world-class lifestyle destination.
In his remarks, Julius Berger Nigeria’s Managing Director, Dr. Peer Lubasch, underscored the company’s commitment to delivering a project that matches international standards.
“Centenary City is not just another urban development. It is a catalyst for job creation, investment, and business growth. It will be a showcase of Nigeria’s cultural identity blended with modern infrastructure, from luxury hotels and leisure spaces to shopping malls and a championship golf course,” Lubasch said.
He noted that the newly signed contract includes the construction of a 4.31 km dual carriageway, which he described as the city’s “first major artery,” opening access to development zones and laying the groundwork for future expansion.
“With over 60 years of experience, Julius Berger has consistently delivered infrastructure that endures. We will bring the same precision and quality to the Centenary City project, ensuring that its foundation is as solid as its vision,” Lubasch added.
The Centenary City project, launched during Nigeria’s 100th anniversary celebrations in 2014, has long been touted as a transformative development for Abuja, one that blends commerce, leisure, and culture into a single modern hub. With construction now officially resumed, stakeholders are optimistic the long-delayed project is finally on the path to realization.
