Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has revealed that he is facing intense pressure from influential political figures urging him to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking over the weekend at an event held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Jos, Governor Mutfwang confirmed that despite sustained political overtures, he remains steadfast in his commitment to the PDP, insisting that only divine guidance and the will of the people who elected him would determine his political future.
“It is true that they have been putting pressure on me,” Mutfwang said. “But I told them that only two people can authorise me to change my party — one is the God of heaven, and the other is you, the people.”
His remarks come amid speculation that the governor might be considering crossing over to the APC, following recent political realignments within the state.
Just weeks earlier, APC leaders in Plateau had moved to block any possible defection by Mutfwang, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Jos. The meeting reportedly ended with a unanimous endorsement of a motion to prevent the governor’s entry into the party.
The motion was moved by Festus Fuanter, former Deputy National Secretary of the APC, who stated: “We don’t want anybody coming to our party. You do your thing, and we’ll do ours.”
Fuanter added that the APC was confident in its organizational strength and did not need reinforcement from politicians outside its ranks as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Reacting to the development, Governor Mutfwang dismissed the notion that he was seeking to defect, suggesting that those trying to block his entry into the APC were acting out of fear of his political influence.
Political analysts in the state say Mutfwang’s firm stance reflects both his confidence in the PDP’s revival efforts and his determination to maintain political stability amid rising tension between rival parties in Plateau.
The governor, who has maintained a conciliatory tone since assuming office, has repeatedly called for unity and development across party lines, even as speculations about his political future continue to swirl.
