British billionaire and Virgin Group founder, Sir Richard Branson, has announced the passing of his wife, Joan Templeman, describing the loss as “heartbreaking” and noting that “life will never be the same without her.”
Templeman, aged 80, died recently in England, where she had been recovering from a back injury, according to a tribute Branson published on Wednesday. Her death was first revealed in an emotional Instagram post on Tuesday night.
In a moving message shared on the Virgin Group website, Branson reflected on their five-decade partnership, calling it a relationship “filled with tears and laughter, kindness, and a love that shaped our family more than words could ever capture.”
“We just had lots of laughs. We were very lucky,” he added, noting that the family — including their children, Holly and Sam, and several grandchildren — are “devastated” by her passing.
Branson and Templeman met in London in 1976, with the entrepreneur often recalling that he fell in love with her at first sight. They married in 1989 on Necker Island, the Caribbean paradise Branson purchased in the late 1970s for $180,000, and where the couple lived for decades.
Despite being married to one of the world’s most recognizable businessmen, Templeman remained intensely private, seldom granting interviews and keeping her life far from the public eye. Branson described her as a “down-to-earth Scottish lady” who “lived so fully and joyfully, always thinking of others, always lifting everyone else up.”
Tributes have begun pouring in from across the world as friends, admirers, and Virgin Group staff remember Templeman’s quiet but profound influence on Branson’s life and legacy.
