Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has called on Nigerian leaders to place citizens’ welfare at the heart of governance in 2026, warning that failure to do so could jeopardise the nation’s future amid ongoing economic and security challenges.
Jonathan made the appeal in his New Year message to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, urging leaders at all levels to embrace service, integrity and shared responsibility as the country enters a new year. The message was released through his Media Assistant, Wealth Dickson Ominabo.
Reflecting on the past year, the former president acknowledged that many Nigerians endured severe economic pressures and persistent insecurity, which he said had tested the nation’s resilience and left numerous families facing hardship and loss.
He noted that these challenges underscored the need for leadership that is firmly rooted in the needs and welfare of the people, stressing that governance must go beyond rhetoric to genuine concern for citizens.
Despite the difficulties, Jonathan praised Nigerians for their perseverance, unity and quiet determination, describing the resilience of the people as one of the country’s greatest strengths. He said acts of solidarity across communities had helped sustain hope in uncertain times.
Looking ahead to 2026, Jonathan urged both leaders and citizens to recommit to the ideals that bind the nation together, emphasising that patriotism must be matched with duty, humility and integrity in public service.
According to him, Nigeria’s progress depends on collective effort, mutual respect and an unwavering focus on the national interest, which he said are critical to achieving stability and inclusive development.
Jonathan concluded by wishing Nigerians a peaceful and fulfilling new year, expressing hope that the country would continue to move steadily toward unity, justice and shared prosperity.
