PORT HARCOURT — Lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly from the Ijaw extraction have called on the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, to reopen the Assembly Chambers to allow the resumption of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The lawmakers made the call on Friday, declaring their readiness to continue the impeachment process, after earlier attempts to seek a political resolution to the crisis in the state reportedly failed.
The Assembly was expected to reconvene on Thursday but could not sit as scheduled. However, the legislators later gathered on Friday at the Conference Hall within their residential quarters, where they renewed calls for the continuation of the impeachment proceedings.
According to the lawmakers, their decision to proceed was informed by what they described as the continued refusal of the governor and his deputy to address the constitutional issues raised in the impeachment notice served on them.
Two members of the Assembly, Hon. Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Hon. Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, who addressed journalists, said they had abandoned their earlier position in favour of political dialogue.
They explained that the lack of progress in resolving the issues amicably left them with no option but to resume the impeachment process.
The lawmakers urged the Speaker to formally reconvene the House to enable legislative business, including the impeachment proceedings, to continue.
