The ancient town of Argungu has come alive as more than 40,000 fishermen gathered at Matan Fada, the iconic riverside arena of the globally celebrated Argungu Fishing Festival, ahead of the grand finale.
From the early hours of the day, enthusiastic anglers positioned themselves nearly two kilometres from the riverbank, preparing for the highly anticipated plunge into the waters in search of the largest catch. The buildup has transformed the historic town into a vibrant spectacle of culture and competition.
Drumbeats, chants and colourful traditional displays filled the air, reflecting the rich heritage that has elevated Argungu into a major tourism destination. Visitors and dignitaries have already occupied designated seating areas in anticipation of the arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is expected to attend the event alongside Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris.
Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed, confirmed that top government officials, governors from across the country, federal ministers, diplomats, captains of industry and traditional rulers are also expected at the event, underscoring its national and international prominence.
Security has been significantly reinforced around the venue as excitement mounts toward the defining moment of the festival — when thousands of fishermen simultaneously surge into the river armed with traditional fishing tools in a dramatic contest of skill and endurance.
Tourists and spectators from across Nigeria and beyond are closely watching to see who will emerge victorious by catching the giant fish that will clinch this year’s top prize.
With all eyes on Matan Fada, Argungu once again takes centre stage as tradition, prestige and fierce competition combine in one of Africa’s most spectacular cultural celebrations.
