The United States Mission Nigeria has issued a renewed warning to Nigerians against visa fraud and overstaying in the United States, cautioning that such violations could result in stricter scrutiny for future applicants.
In a statement shared on its official X platform on Monday, the mission emphasized that fraudulent practices by a few individuals could negatively impact genuine applicants seeking travel opportunities.
“Those who seek to commit fraud bring increased scrutiny on all visa applicants. We protect the U.S. visa system with rigorous screening, and our officers take fraud very seriously,” the post stated.
The mission also encouraged Nigerians to report suspected visa-related fraud to appropriate authorities, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the U.S. immigration system.
According to the statement, many Nigerians continue to travel legally to the United States as temporary workers, professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors, noting that compliance with visa rules helps preserve access for legitimate travelers.
Earlier, on February 9, the mission had raised similar concerns, pointing to persistent cases of visa overstays by some Nigerian travelers as a key factor affecting future opportunities for other applicants. It warned that violations by a minority often influence broader visa policies.
The renewed advisory comes amid longstanding concerns by U.S. consular authorities over fraudulent applications originating from Nigeria. In recent years, such concerns have contributed to policy measures including reduced visa validity periods for certain categories of Nigerian travelers and more intensive background checks.
The mission stressed that strengthening compliance with visa regulations is essential to safeguarding travel access for students, business visitors, and families who adhere to the rules.
