The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday suspended impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.
The decision was reached during the Assembly’s resumed plenary in Port Harcourt, where lawmakers moved a motion to halt the impeachment process that had been initiated against the two top state officials.
The suspension comes amid heightened political tension in Rivers State, where disagreements between the executive and the legislature had escalated in recent weeks, fueling speculation of a deepening crisis within the state’s political structure.
Although details of President Tinubu’s intervention were not immediately disclosed, sources within the state government indicated that efforts were made at the federal level to de-escalate the situation and foster dialogue between the warring parties.
During Thursday’s sitting, members of the Assembly agreed to put the impeachment process on hold in the interest of stability and peace in the state. The motion received majority support, effectively pausing further legislative action on the matter.
The development is expected to ease political uncertainty in Rivers State, at least temporarily, as stakeholders await further consultations and possible reconciliation moves.
Neither Governor Fubara nor Deputy Governor Odu had publicly reacted to the Assembly’s latest decision as of the time of filing this report.
