UK Police Arrest Ex-US Envoy Peter Mandelson in Expanding Epstein Inquiry

Former British ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, has been released on bail after his arrest in London on suspicion of misconduct in public office, as authorities intensify investigations linked to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The 72-year-old former Labour heavyweight was taken into custody on Monday by officers from Metropolitan Police as part of a criminal probe launched earlier this month.

In a statement, police confirmed the arrest, saying officers detained “a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office” at an address in Camden on February 23. He was transported to a London police station for questioning.

Authorities said the arrest followed the execution of search warrants at two properties in the Wiltshire and Camden areas. Mandelson was later released on bail pending further investigation and was seen returning to his residence in the early hours of Tuesday. Police stressed that an arrest does not imply guilt but indicates that investigators suspect an offence may have been committed.

The investigation follows the release in January of emails between Mandelson and Epstein by the United States Department of Justice. The correspondence suggested a closer relationship between the two men than previously disclosed publicly.

According to the documents, Mandelson shared information with Epstein while serving as a minister under former Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 2009. Mandelson has previously acknowledged the association, stating he “very deeply” regretted his connection with Epstein, though he has not commented publicly on the latest developments.

Earlier this month, he resigned from the Labour Party led by Keir Starmer and stepped down from Britain’s House of Lords.

The case has evolved into a major political controversy in the United Kingdom. Epstein, who died in a U.S. jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges, remains central to ongoing investigations involving several high-profile figures.

The fallout has already led to the resignation of two senior government officials and increased scrutiny of the government’s vetting procedures. Parliament has ordered the release of documents related to Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador to Washington in late 2024, with the first tranche expected in early March.

Starmer has previously alleged that Mandelson misrepresented the extent of his ties to Epstein during the vetting process.

Misconduct in public office is a serious criminal offence in the United Kingdom, carrying a potential maximum sentence of life imprisonment if prosecuted and convicted in the Crown Court.

Mandelson’s political career has spanned decades. He rose to prominence in the 1990s as a key architect of the “New Labour” project under former Prime Minister Tony Blair. However, he resigned twice from Blair’s cabinet — first in 1998 over an undisclosed home loan and again in 2001 following allegations he sought to influence a passport application.

He later returned to government under Brown between 2008 and 2010 before re-entering public service in 2024 as ambassador to the United States. Initially seen as a strategic diplomatic appointment, his tenure ended abruptly after documents detailing his links to Epstein emerged.

Separately, controversy has widened to include other public figures. Last week, Prince Andrew was arrested over separate allegations that he shared confidential government documents with Epstein — claims he has consistently denied.
