The Coalition of Arewa Youths for Peace and Security has distanced itself from a man who launched a social media attack on Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, describing the comments as reckless and misleading.
In a statement jointly signed by its President, Mohamed Jallo, and Secretary, Zainab Ibrahim, the group condemned the remarks made by the individual, who claimed to be speaking on behalf of Northern youths while demanding the resignation of the defence minister.
The coalition said the individual does not represent its views or those of responsible youths across Northern Nigeria committed to peace and national security.
According to the group, the remarks were not only disrespectful but also showed a lack of understanding of Nigeria’s security structure and the ongoing efforts by the armed forces under Musa’s leadership.
“The person making such statements clearly does not understand the complexity of the security challenges confronting our nation or the strategic reforms currently being implemented within the defence sector,” the statement said. It added that the outburst could be politically motivated or influenced by interests seeking to undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s security leadership.
The coalition also rejected the claim that Musa is a “sleeping minister,” describing it as a gross misrepresentation and an attempt to damage the reputation of a decorated military officer who has spent decades serving the country.
The group noted that during his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff, Musa coordinated intensified joint military operations involving the Army, Navy and Air Force, leading to significant gains in the fight against terrorism, insurgency and banditry across the country.
It further stated that since becoming Defence Minister, Musa has continued to pursue reforms aimed at modernising Nigeria’s defence capabilities, improving troop welfare, strengthening civil-military relations and deepening cooperation with international partners to combat transnational security threats.
The coalition emphasised that Nigeria’s security challenges require a coordinated national effort and responsible public discourse.
While acknowledging citizens’ right to express opinions, the group warned that reckless accusations and emotional rhetoric could weaken national morale and embolden criminal elements.
The organisation urged Nigerians to disregard the presenter’s claims, insisting that he does not represent the voice or aspirations of Northern youths.
It also reaffirmed its confidence in Musa’s leadership and called on citizens to support the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence in their efforts to restore lasting peace and stability across the country.
