Tinubu Seeks Deeper UK Partnership on Security, Regional Stability

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening security ties with the United Kingdom, as both countries move toward a renewed alliance to tackle terrorism and instability in West Africa.

Speaking on Wednesday night at a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, Tinubu said discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer would focus on Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and broader regional security concerns.

The President noted that Nigeria continues to shoulder significant responsibility in maintaining stability across West Africa, particularly amid growing threats linked to insurgency in the Sahel region.

“Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability,” Tinubu said, adding that collaboration with the UK remains vital in addressing these threats.

The banquet formed part of activities marking Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to the United Kingdom, where he also made history as the first Nigerian leader to address a gathering at Windsor Castle.

Reflecting on his personal history, Tinubu expressed gratitude to the UK for offering him refuge during the military regime of former Head of State, General Sani Abacha. He recalled how the Metropolitan Police provided protection following threats from agents of the junta during his years in exile as a pro-democracy activist.

“That solidarity remains etched in our collective memory, and it is deeply humbling for me to stand before Your Majesty today as the President of a democratic Nigeria,” he said.

Tinubu’s remarks also highlighted the longstanding ties between Nigeria and the UK, particularly in governance and legal systems influenced by English common law. He noted that these shared traditions continue to shape Nigeria’s institutional framework.

The President further praised the contributions of Nigerians in the UK, especially within the National Health Service, where Nigerian-trained doctors and nurses form a significant part of the workforce.

He also pointed to prominent British athletes of Nigerian heritage, including Maro Itoje, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Anthony Joshua, as symbols of the strong cultural and human connections between both nations.

Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the Commonwealth, describing the country as a key member of the 56-nation bloc under King Charles III.

Despite ongoing security challenges, the President expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, describing its people as resilient, innovative, and determined to achieve their full potential.

The two-day state visit, running from March 18 to 19, marks the first official visit by a Nigerian President to the UK in 37 years. The trip is expected to yield several agreements spanning trade, investment, defence, and cultural cooperation, including a £746 million financing deal for the rehabilitation of key Lagos ports.
