The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the northern region has called on its members to remain alert and take proactive measures to ensure their safety following a recent surge in violence.
The appeal comes in the wake of a Palm Sunday attack on the Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, where gunmen reportedly killed more than 20 people and left several others injured. The incident, which occurred around 8 p.m., has heightened concerns ahead of the Easter celebrations.
In response to the deteriorating security situation, Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has placed troops on nationwide alert, assuring citizens of reinforced security measures during the festive period. Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said the military has intensified surveillance and operational readiness to prevent further attacks.
Despite these assurances, Northern CAN Chairman, Rev. Joseph Hayab, expressed frustration over continued violence and urged Christians not to succumb to fear. He emphasized the need for communities to remain resilient and organized in the face of ongoing threats.
Hayab noted that repeated attacks during major Christian celebrations such as Easter and Christmas have become a troubling pattern since 2009. He stressed that while the association is not publicly disclosing all its strategies, it is encouraging members to stay steadfast in their faith and not allow fear to disrupt religious observances.
He also criticized what he described as the government’s inability to effectively curb the violence, warning that the persistent insecurity is eroding public confidence in official assurances.
The CAN leader maintained that the attacks appear aimed at discouraging worship and instilling fear, urging church leaders to continue encouraging their congregations to stand firm and continue their spiritual activities despite the challenges.
As Easter approaches, authorities and religious leaders alike face mounting pressure to ensure the safety of citizens while preserving the significance of the religious celebration.
